18 Daily Items That No Longer Make Sense to Purchase

Written By Jill Taylor

Throughout history, many of us have been led to believe that certain products are necessary. But as time has gone by, it’s become clear that quite a lot of these just aren’t worth it at all. Let’s take a look at 18 of these that you shouldn’t bother buying.

Multivitamins

Research by Johns Hopkins Medicine has concluded that multivitamins have no real benefits and that excessive Vitamin E can actually cause more harm to the body than good. It’s worth staying away from these in general and opting for a balanced diet instead.

Electric Egg Cookers

There’s not much point in buying an egg cooker when you can just cook an egg in a conventional way. Eggs are not particularly challenging to prepare, so the electric egg cooker seems like a pretty redundant piece of kit!

Pizza Cutters

When was the last time you actually used the pizza cutter in your drawer? A good knife accomplishes the same task and is a lot easier to clean if you do the washing up by hand. At the end of the day, pizza cutters are just a waste of drawer space.

Mosquito Zappers

Mosquito zappers do kill bugs, but not the ones we want them to kill. The New York Times says bug zappers don’t actually kill mosquitoes, so they’re a waste of time and money. Plus, they’re not particularly environmentally friendly, so the whole product is a bit of a scam.

Salad Spinners

These bulky pieces of kitchen equipment aren’t necessary to buy. Washing and drying your greens can be done in many other ways that are just as efficient. So, it’s best to avoid a salad spinner to save money and space in your kitchen.

Electric Can Openers

Opening a can with a manual can opener is hardly a long experience. All you have to do is turn the handle a few times, and you’re good to go. So, electric can openers feel a little lazy and are probably a waste of money for most people.

Air Fresheners

There are plenty of natural ways to freshen the air in your home, so going for a synthetic option is not only a waste of money but also bad for the environment. Why not try baking soda or simmering spices? You’ll be surprised how effective they are.

Fax Machines

Gitnux reports that many people are still buying fax machines despite them being very outdated technology. There are so many other ways to send the information you want to get across from a fax that will save you time and money.

Robot Vacuum Cleaners

There was a phase a few years ago when everybody wanted to buy a robot vacuum cleaner to keep their floors clean, but it quickly became clear that they were a bit of a gimmick. The product was mimicked in Breaking Bad for that very reason.

Bread Makers

A normal oven can bake your bread fine, so buying a bread maker isn’t the best idea, especially if you have a smaller kitchen. They’re bulky pieces of equipment, and they’re far from cheap, either. Try making bread in a more conventional way and see how you get on.

Bottled Water

It’s highly recommended that you avoid buying bottled water whenever you can. This product is seriously unsustainable! Buy a reusable water bottle to take with you on the go, and you’ll be saving yourself money and protecting the environment. It’s definitely worth it!

Meat-Shredding Claws

It’s rarely necessary to use meat claws unless you’re going to be making a massive barbecue for a lot of people. You can just use a regular fork to shred meat for regular meals for yourself and the family. These claws are more of a novelty than a necessity.

Swiffers

Swiffers, or disposable cloths, are another disposable product that isn’t good for the environment. You’ll find that you save money if you opt for reusable clothes instead, as disposable ones rack up over time.

Phones with Buttons

The development of the touchscreen has made the classic phone with buttons obsolete, other than for those with disabilities or short-sightedness. Some people claim that buttons are easier to use, but for most people, that’s not true. Touchscreens are incredibly accurate and responsive these days.

Calculators

Almost all cell phones, smart or not, now have a calculator built in. Back at school, when our math teachers said we wouldn’t always have access to a calculator…well, that wasn’t true. So, buying one is just going to be a waste of money.

Alarm Clocks

Almost half of the respondents in a survey by The Sydney Morning Herald used alarms to wake up in the morning. But buying an actual alarm clock is a waste of money when you can use the function on your smartphone that works just as well!

GPS Navigation Systems

There was a short period when many drivers had a sat nav in their cars, but these products have been phased out by smartphones these days. Just as long as you have mobile data, you’ll be able to get anywhere you need with your phone.

Manually Backing Up Data

Buying an external hard drive can be a good purchase, but it’s usually easier and more affordable to back up your data on the cloud. Cloud storage has reduced in price drastically over the past few years and is now more efficient than hardware storage.
