17 Things at Walmart That Aren’t Worth the Hype

Written By Jill Taylor

Walmart is one of the most popular stores in America because it sells just about everything. But that doesn’t mean you should purchase every item you need from there. Here are 17 popular things at Walmart that aren’t worth your money.

Laptops

Alot writes, “Walmart has a mix of low-quality no-name laptops. They’re not an awful choice but don’t expect them to last very long. They’ll also have a hard time keeping up with software nowadays.” You can usually find better deals on sites such as Amazon, where you’ll also have more customer support.

Televisions

Walmart sells many low-end televisions, which means they’re of poor quality and have short life spans. Name-brand options are available in stores, but they’re usually overpriced. You’re much better off heading to other retailers that specialize in TVs and electronics, as you’ll find more enticing deals.

Small Kitchen Appliances

There isn’t much variety when it comes to small kitchen appliances at Walmart. The ones they do have are often overpriced, compared to where you may have seen them online. If you purchase any small appliances online, then you’ll find more color options and longer guarantees.

Vitamins and Supplements

Many quality issues have been reported with Walmart’s vitamins. You should purchase any vitamins and supplements from trusted healthcare retailers, whether that’s in drug stores or at healthcare stores. You want to make sure you’re taking the right dose and that the ingredients are accurate.

Pet Food

Pet food is often considered to be expensive at Walmart. This is because there aren’t bulk buying options, which can save you a lot of money. It’s also true that the ingredients in Walmart’s pet food aren’t of high quality, which means your pet may not be getting all of their required nutrients.

Organic Products

The prices of organic produce at Walmart are much higher than at its competitors’, such as Target. Eat This, Not That writes that two pounds of organic apples at Walmart cost $4.60, but at Target, they’re $2.79; the same also goes for organic oranges, with a four-pound bag costing $5.22 at Walmart and $3.99 at Target.

Ground Beef

There have been reports that the ground beef at Walmart is of low quality, but still priced high compared to other stores. With concerns regarding the freshness of Walmart’s ground beef, you’re better off purchasing it from other grocery stores, such as Aldi.

High-End Perfume

Even though high-end perfume is the same product across all stores, Walmart still seems to sell it at a higher price point compared to other retailers. They also have a limited selection, which means you’re better off purchasing it online or at a specific perfume store.

Gift Bags

If you have a loved one’s birthday coming up or it’s the holiday season and you need a gift bag, you’re better off heading to a dollar store rather than Walmart. They’re usually marked up when it’s the holidays, so they’re best purchased in bulk.

Nuts

It’s a much better option to buy nuts in bulk rather than at Walmart. You’ll usually get far more for your money, and they’ll most likely be fresher than Walmart’s. Buying them in bulk also gives you more options, as Walmart may have limited choices.

Books

Walmart doesn’t have a large selection of books and they’re often priced high. You’ll find more choices in a local bookstore, or for the best deals, you can head to Amazon. Buying second-hand books is also more environmentally friendly, and you’ll get them for a fraction of the price compared to new books.

Shoes

Blonde & Balanced writes, “Looking for long-lasting shoes? Walmart’s selection might not cut it. Better durability and quality are found elsewhere.” You should purchase your shoes either at a specialty store or online. There’ll be far more options and they will usually be of better fit and quality.

Video Games

Walmart’s video games are often priced high, and they don’t have a large selection. If you’re looking for a particular game, then you’re best off heading to a gaming store or looking online. If you aren’t after a particular game, then second-hand options will still be of high quality and at a lower price.

String Cheese

It’s a far better option to bulk-buy string cheese at Costco. It isn’t something that’s going to go out of date quickly, and purchasing it at Walmart will make it more expensive in the long run. It may also be of poor quality, and they won’t have as many specialty options.

Disposable Utensils

If you have an event coming up, then you may need disposable utensils, so there’s less washing up to do after. Instead of purchasing these at Walmart, head to a dollar store, where they’ll be less expensive. If there’s one thing you don’t want to spend a lot of money on, it’s disposable cutlery.

Maple Syrup

Walmart’s maple syrup isn’t of high quality. For example, Mashed writes, ‘Unfortunately, Walmart’s syrup aisle is a labyrinth of inauthentic, high-fructose corn syrup-riddled pancake syrup.” You can find more organic and cheaper versions at other stores or purchase them in bulk at places such as Costco.

Greeting Cards

Greeting cards have a high markup at Walmart, and they’re best purchased from dollar stores. Walmart might not have as wide a variety, and its limited options may not suit your taste. For loved ones, you may also want to purchase a more personal card where there’s space for you to write a meaningful message.
