20 Common Mistakes Even Good Pet Owners Make

Written By Babatunde Sanni

Even after owning all types of dogs for multiple decades, there are certain mistakes we can’t quite seem to escape. Maybe reminding ourselves can help avoid them, so we’ve compiled 20 mistakes to carefully look out for to provide the best care for your dog.

Overfeeding

When you overfeed your dog, you aren’t giving it a better life. All you’re doing is exposing it to health issues like obesity, diabetes, and joint problems. According to Hills Pets Nutrition, this also causes you to potentially spend 25% more on medical bills on average. Portion control according to specific guidelines for your pet’s age, size, and activity level is important.

Neglecting Dental Care

Pet owners also tend to ignore dental care, and, for instance, the AKC says that, with dogs, two-thirds of owners are guilty of this. If you’re on the wrong side of these numbers, you’re sure to see your dog suffer from tooth pain, cavities, and even heart disease. All these can be easily avoided by simply brushing and giving your pets dental chews daily.

Not Providing Mental Stimulation

The COAPE Organization shares that mental stimulation can help pets manage stress and anxiety and even improve their problem-solving skills. But despite these advantages, it’s often overlooked. To prevent the resultant boredom and destructive behaviors from this, it’s always best to incorporate toys, puzzles, and interactive play into your pet’s daily routine.

Inconsistent Training

When it comes to training animals, consistency in routine and commands is key. But we still see owners fail at this, giving their pets mixed signals that are only confusing, hindering (and elongating) the learning process, and causing frustration for both parties involved. You get the most from training sessions by giving your pets clear, consistent (preferably one-syllable) commands.

Overlooking Microchipping

The AVMA reveals that microchipping is simple, tamper-proof, and one of the most effective ways to ensure your pet can be identified if lost. Yet some owners still neglect it.

You should ensure your pet is microchipped and keep the contact information up to date, as this small step can make a big difference in reuniting with your pet if they ever go missing.

Ignoring Exercise Needs

Pets require regular physical activity to stay healthy and happy, but it’s often neglected too. Exercise helps prevent obesity, reduces anxiety, and provides mental stimulation, which can prevent your pet from engaging in destructive behaviors.

Try tailoring activities to your pet’s breed and age, ensuring they get the right amount of exercise to stay fit and content.

Skipping Routine Vet Visits

Regular veterinary check-ups are essential for detecting potential health issues early. And skipping these visits can result in missed opportunities for preventative care and early intervention.

It’s always a better idea, regardless of the cost, to schedule routine vet visits to monitor your pet’s health and address any concerns promptly.

Using Inappropriate Products

Some household products, like cleaning agents, certain plants, and even some foods, pose risks to pets, potentially causing poisoning or other health issues. But owners still use them unknowingly. You should always research products and their pet-friendliness to ensure your home environment is safe and free from potential hazards.

Lack of Socialization

Socializing pets from an early age is crucial for their development and behavior. Without proper socialization, pets can become anxious or aggressive around unfamiliar people and animals, leading to challenging behavior.

Introduce your pet to various environments, people, and other animals gradually to build their confidence.

Inadequate Grooming

Matted fur, overgrown nails, and dirty ears can cause discomfort and health problems like infections. And hence, regular grooming is essential for your pet’s health and comfort. But it’s sadly one of the most frequently neglected aspects of pet care.

You need to establish a grooming routine appropriate for your pet’s breed to keep them looking and feeling their best.

Leaving Pets Alone For Too Long

Extended periods alone can lead to anxiety and behavioral issues in pets, such as excessive barking or destructive chewing. While it’s not always avoidable, ensuring your pet has companionship, toys, and activities can help alleviate loneliness.

Consider pet sitters or dog daycare if you’re frequently away from home for long stretches.

Not Adjusting Diet with Age

As pets age, their dietary needs change, but owners may not adjust their feeding accordingly. Older pets often require fewer calories and different nutrients to maintain health and prevent issues like arthritis. Consult with your veterinarian to modify your pet’s diet based on their age, activity level, and health status.

Ignoring Behavioral Changes

Behavioral changes can be a sign of underlying health issues, yet they are sometimes dismissed as quirks. Sudden changes in activity levels, appetite, or behavior warrant a vet visit for further investigation.

Early detection of potential problems through these changes can lead to more effective treatments and better health outcomes.

Inadequate Hydration

Dehydration can cause serious health problems, such as kidney issues, and ensuring your pet has constant access to fresh water is vital for their health, especially during the warmer months.

You should also regularly check and refill water bowls, especially during hot weather or after exercise, to keep your pet well-hydrated and healthy.

Incorrect Use of Flea and Tick Preventatives

Improper use of flea and tick preventatives can lead to ineffective protection or adverse reactions, sometimes causing skin irritation or illness. Always follow the product’s instructions and consult your vet for recommendations tailored to your pet’s needs. Regular application is necessary to keep these pests at bay, however.

Inconsistent Vaccinations

Keeping your pet’s vaccinations up-to-date is crucial for preventing diseases like rabies and distemper. Inconsistent vaccination schedules can leave your pet vulnerable to infections that could’ve otherwise been avoided. It’s best to maintain a vaccination record and adhere to your vet’s recommended schedule to ensure your pet is protected.

Allowing Unsafe Chewing

Pets also often chew on inappropriate items that can be hazardous, such as electrical cords or small objects that could cause choking. Unlike many other pet owners, to prevent accidents and dental damage, you can provide safe, durable chew toys.

Also, supervise your pet during playtime to ensure they engage with these toys safely, avoiding potential health risks.

Not Spaying or Neutering

Failing to spay or neuter pets can lead to health issues like cancer and contribute to overpopulation. And not only does this procedure prevent these unwanted problems, but you also get to reduce behavioral problems like aggression in your pets.

Discuss with your vet the best time to spay or neuter your pet to enhance their health and well-being.

Ignoring Allergies

Pets can suffer from allergies just like humans, but their symptoms are often overlooked. Itchy skin, ear infections, and gastrointestinal issues can be signs of allergies requiring attention. And you should consult your vet if you notice these symptoms to determine the cause and find appropriate treatments to improve your pet’s comfort.

Unsafe Car Travel

Allowing pets to roam freely in the car can be dangerous for your pet, you, and every other person in it. Using a pet seatbelt, carrier, or crate allows you to avoid distractions and ensures everyone’s safety during travel. Securing your pet also protects them in case of sudden stops or accidents.
