Back in the day, a lot of guys knew how to make furniture and other things out of wood. As Journeyman’s Journal points out, for a very long time, men have taken pride in building things with their own hands. But now, with cheap furniture all over and less space in cities, woodworking has turned into more of a niche hobby than a common skill.

Getting a close shave with a straight razor at the local barbershop was a weekly ritual for many men. It was a chance to relax and bond with other guys. Now, most men prefer the quick convenience of electric razors or multi-blade cartridges at home, missing out on the traditional barbershop vibe.

Boxing used to be the ultimate test of a guy’s toughness. Many neighborhoods had gyms where guys could spar and prove themselves. But now that we know more about the long-term risks of head injuries, fewer men are getting into the ring these days.

Many men used to enjoy carving small objects from wood and it was seen as a relaxing hobby. All you needed was a sharp knife and a piece of wood. Men would spend hours making little figures and useful things. Nowadays, with all the digital entertainment and less interest in hand-crafts, whittling has become a lost art for many modern men.

Smoking a pipe used to be considered a classy, thoughtful habit for gentlemen. The whole process of packing, lighting, and puffing was seen as sophisticated. But with health concerns and changing social attitudes, you don’t see many guys smoking pipes today.
